I did this one a while back, and started tweaking it today. By using the line/shapes tool in photoshop, I created the ships and buildings. You can get very cool abstract and iconic stuff from layering various shapes, and then adding color dodge layers for lighting effects.

More interesting, I think, than even the ships themselves are those two megastructures towards the right and left of the image, as well as the one off in the distance. They, particularly the distant one, just seem to add so much to the sense of scale.
